There are numerous ways to create engaging online sessions. A number of the most common online session formats are listed below:

A large lecture style format in which as presentation is given by a trainer. These usually employ knowledge transfer and test participant understanding. Participants can also contribute to the sessions through asking questions or being polled or quizzed.

A session with a smaller number of participants who are given a specific task to complete in a limited timeframe. These sessions usually have a participant-led discussion or activity that needs to be completed by the members of the group.

An intimate, direct conversation featuring one or two speakers, and an interviewer/facilitator. Speakers are typically influential, high-profile, and/or have a unique perspective on a key issue.

An interactive, well-structured discussion featuring no more than 5 speakers, and at least one facilitator. The discussion is usually around a specific topic of interest/expertise to the selected group of panelists who share a range of perspectives.

These can be one-on-one sessions with the trainer/facilitator in which participants can pose questions or host discussions and give or receive feedback. In an online training, an individual session may also be used to do a participant led activity that does not require them to remain online but to report back at a later stage to the online training group.

Online video viewing session in which live questions and comments can be posted, polls can be conducted and engagement is moderated. This is usually done as a live event.

A step-by-step presentation on a new technology, tool, or technical project. Tech Demos can also be recorded in advance and uploaded for participants to view at any point during the training or as preparation for a specific technical outcome.

A brief, usually 8-15 min presentation on a specific issue. Lightning Talks can also be recorded in advance. These can take the form of a TedTalk, a podcast or short highly specific idea.
