Welcome to the Roadmap!

A first glance at the tools we use to successfully build digital communities and empower young people to enact social change

About RNW Media

RNW Media is an organisation that aims at engaging young people – primarily in the digital space – as well as influencing the societies of young people. With innovative approaches to media and training, we connect communities and change-makers, contributing to a world where young people in restrictive settings confidently claim their rights, assume their place in society, and shape a better future. Our mission is to identify young people’s needs, and to bring young people together in user-owned digital communities where they can safely engage on taboos and sensitive topics and generate strong stories for advocacy to unleash their potential for social change.

We developed large-scale digital communities across a range of platforms—websites, Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram and other channels. Through our platforms young people access information and diverse viewpoints that enable them to make informed decisions, connect to relevant services and influence decision-makers. To read more about who we are and what we do, you can download our brochure.

Our Reach

In 2019, our content was distributed 1.2 billion times across all digital channels. Our videos were viewed 144 million times, our websites received 43 million page-views, and we had 15 million interactions.

In total, 21.4 million young people accessed information via our websites.

About the Roadmap

After building a wide range of successful digital communities across the world, we have come to a point in our evolution in which we want to share what we have learned. The roadmap enables us to draw from our experience in order to help others build similarly engaged and purposeful communities.

The roadmap provides a framework to capture, organise, create and transfer our knowledge and best practices. It also includes the decision tree, a tool which can help teams determine whether building a digital community is the right method to achieve their goal and assess whether organisations have the required resources (budget, partnerships, human resources).

It consists of the key building blocks needed to create and maintain a digital community for social change. Each building block of the roadmap corresponds to a module that assembles both internal and external resources and tools. All modules are available in English, French and Arabic.

Thematic Areas

Our roadmap can be tailored to a wide variety of thematic areas: civic inclusion, gender equality, economic empowerment, climate justice, and more. Below you can find two variants of the roadmap with which we have had a particularly strong track record.

The Inclusive & Sustainable Approach
Addresses social cohesion and inclusive governance

The SRHR Approach
